Temporary Protection in Sweden: How and When to Apply for an Extension in 2026

When to Apply

January 28 – March 4, 2026 (via the Migrationsverket e-service). If you submit your application through the e-service by March 4, it is considered on time, even if your appointment for photos and fingerprints is scheduled for a later date.

Requirements for Extension

To extend your residence permit under the EU Temporary Protection Directive, the following conditions must be met:

  • You hold a current residence permit in Sweden under the EU Directive.
  • You continue to meet the requirements for temporary protection under the Directive.
  • You are currently residing in Sweden.

What to Prepare

  • Case number (Ärendenummer) for each person included in the application (found on your UT-card or in your previous decision).
  • No attachments required: You do not need to attach passport copies or other documents.

One Application for the Family

You can apply for yourself, up to 2 adult family members (as co-applicants), and up to 10 children under the age of 18 for whom you are the legal guardian.

  • A child can only be a co-applicant under their legal guardian(s).
  • Unaccompanied minors can apply independently — confirmation from a "god man" is not required.

After Applying – Mandatory Step

All family members must visit Migrationsverket in person to have their photos and fingerprints taken. You can book an appointment through the e-service while submitting your application.

If You Apply Late (after your permit expires)

You will need to apply for protection from scratch. You are not allowed to work until a new permit is granted. You may also lose eligibility for certain types of support and will have to re-apply for them later.

If You Have Changed Your Address

  • If you are registered in the population register (folkbokförd), you must notify Skatteverket by filing a "flyttanmälan" (change of address).
  • If you are not registered (inte folkbokförd), notify Migrationsverket directly.
